Distribution |
The geographical range of Sapeli is from the Ivory Coast to the Cameroon, eastward through Democratic Republic of Congo to Uganda. It is found in different forest types, including deciduous, evergreen, and transitional zones.
The wood |
The heartwood is pink when freshly cut, but it matures to a red-brown or purple-brown color. The sapwood is gray-pink or cream in color.
Seasoning |
Sapeli is prone to distort during drying. Moderate temperatures are recommended especially during the early stages of drying. Slight checking may occur during drying, but the species is generally free from the cross-breaks which occur in African mahogany.
Workability |
The timber saws well, but it requires a slow feed rate. Carbide-tipped tools are recommended. Quartersawn stock with interlocked grain tends to tear in planing, but the timber planes easily, especially backsawn material. Planed surfaces are usually very smooth.
